Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors

Corporate Departure
The economist announced he would withdraw from public positions after Congressional panel made public his repeated correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is exiting the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

Summers commented in a release that he was "thankful for the privilege to have served, optimistic about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await tracking their progress".

Summers, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, stated on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Message Exchange

The freshly disclosed messages revealed that the official exchanged messages with the financier until the day before the financier's 2019 detention for suspected sex trafficking of minors.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company said it accepted the economist's determination to resign.

"We acknowledge his many contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the directors," the company stated.

Congressional Action

This announcement comes after both chambers of the US legislature decided on Tuesday to approve a bill that would compel the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The bill will afterward head to the desk of President Trump for approval. The President has indicated he plans to endorse the measure, after changing his view on the issue following objections from his supporters.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of Epstein-related correspondence made public by the House Oversight Committee last week included numerous high-profile figures in the financier's former circle, without implying any criminal activity by those people.

The messages showed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with he often trying to link the academic to notable international personalities.

Personal Accountability

After the correspondence were shared with the public, the former official said he assumed "complete accountability for my ill-advised choice to persist in corresponding with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he wanted "to reestablish trust and fix connections with the persons most important to me".

Professional History

Summers served in high-level positions under Democratic administrations; acting as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He presided over the university from 2001 to 2006 and is still a academic there. When stating his step-down from public duties recently on Monday, he stated he would continue his educational duties.

Additional Consequences

Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank in Washington where Summers was a senior fellow, verified that Summers was not affiliated with the organization.

He entered the board of OpenAI, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to oust its CEO the company leader.
