Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.

The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a massive family reunion. This latest installment signals the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters returning to the fray.

"Coming back to a role you portrayed in your twenties when you're 55 was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard reveals.

A Triumphant Return for Fallon Favorites

Reports have confirmed that three different characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, despite dying in prior movies. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the endearing and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.

The Weight of Iconic Status

For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first time since a small appearance is a dream come true, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he received the offer from the series creator.

"I remember the phone call. I recall the pleasantries. I remember him posing the question. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."

Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the years since the original film premiered, which made Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.

"Truthfully, that's a part that is infamous, like it or not," he explains. "A character that is now represented in each and every Ghostface mask that appears every Halloween."

The Fear of Disappointing the Fans

Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling significant pressure about not wanting to be the one who ruins the beloved series.

"It's either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the movie's gonna work. I don't know if people want to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the franchise. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"

Speculation and Excitement Run High

While many longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others come back persists. Perhaps they live as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Alternatively, maybe they are in some way all alive in a bizarre communal situation. The possibility of a self-referential story, inspired by classic horror movies, also exists.

Audiences will discover the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
