Texas Top Legal Officer Sues Tylenol Producers Regarding Autism Allegations

Courtroom Proceedings
The Texas Attorney General, who supports former President Trump campaigning for the United States Senate, accused the drug companies of withholding potential dangers of acetaminophen

The top legal official in Texas Paxton is taking legal action against the manufacturers of acetaminophen, alleging the companies concealed safety concerns that the medication posed to pediatric neurological development.

This legal action comes a month after Donald Trump promoted an unproven link between using Tylenol - alternatively called paracetamol - while pregnant and autism spectrum disorder in children.

Paxton is suing the pharmaceutical giant, which formerly manufactured the drug, the only pain reliever approved for expectant mothers, and Kenvue, which currently produces it.

In a official comment, he stated they "betrayed America by gaining financially from pain and promoting medication without regard for the potential hazards."

Kenvue says there is insufficient reliable data linking acetaminophen to autism.

"These corporations lied for decades, intentionally threatening millions to line their pockets," Paxton, a Republican, declared.

Kenvue commented that it was "seriously troubled by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the security of acetaminophen and the likely effects that could have on the health of American women and children."

On its online platform, Kenvue also stated it had "continuously evaluated the relevant science and there is insufficient valid information that shows a verified association between using acetaminophen and autism."

Associations acting on behalf of physicians and medical practitioners concur.

ACOG has said paracetamol - the main ingredient in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for expectant mothers to address discomfort and fever, which can pose serious health risks if not addressed.

"In more than two decades of investigation on the use of paracetamol in gestation, no reliable research has successfully concluded that the use of paracetamol in any stage of pregnancy leads to neurodevelopmental disorders in young ones," the association stated.

The court filing mentions current declarations from the Trump administration in arguing the medication is allegedly unsafe.

In recent weeks, Trump caused concern from health experts when he told women during pregnancy to "fight like hell" not to take Tylenol when ill.

The US Food and Drug Administration then released a statement that doctors should think about restricting the use of acetaminophen, while also mentioning that "a direct connection" between the medication and autism spectrum disorder in young ones has remains unverified.

The Health Department head Robert F Kennedy Jr, who manages the Food and Drug Administration, had promised in spring to conduct "extensive scientific investigation" that would establish the origin of autism spectrum disorder in a matter of months.

But experts advised that finding a single cause of autism - considered by experts to be the outcome of a complicated interplay of genetic and environmental factors - would prove challenging.

Autism is a form of permanent neurological difference and condition that impacts how persons perceive and interact with the world, and is diagnosed using doctors' observations.

In his court filing, the attorney general - who supports Trump who is seeking the Senate - alleges Kenvue and J&J "deliberately disregarded and tried to quiet the research" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

The lawsuit aims to force the firms "destroy any promotional materials" that asserts acetaminophen is safe for pregnant women.

The Texas lawsuit mirrors the grievances of a assembly of guardians of young ones with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who sued the manufacturers of acetaminophen in 2022.

A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit, stating research from the plaintiffs' authorities was lacking definitive proof.
