The English golfer Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Battle Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed exceptional nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff after a topsy-turvy final round of play.
The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie from just over eight foot to clinch the win, repeating his only previous tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff victory over the same opponent.
Final Round Excitement
Rai entered the last day with a one-shot lead over countryman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under final round that featured seven birdies and two bogeys.
Fleetwood edged a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final hole.
Playoff Decider
That set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even better person. To compete alongside him the last two days was really special,” stated Rai, the current world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”
Other Contenders
The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to do, coming up a stroke short in a shared third place with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 closing round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell hit an superb last round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
