The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro appears as among these.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
