The Alan Turing Institute will carry out a scientific research initiative specifically created to protect the UK from malicious attacks, according to a Tuesday declaration.
This strategic shift follows major restructuring at the publicly-funded organization, including the stepping down of its previous CEO last month after both staff concerns and government pressure for strategic overhaul.
Increasing Digital Threats
The new mission comes amid growing concern about the UK's exposure to digital service failures and cyber-attacks.
Recent events have highlighted these vulnerabilities, including a significant disruption affecting global cloud computing and fresh digital assaults that affected operations at key facilities and logistics systems across several organizations.
Guidance and Direction
A ex-military leader of the the nation's space operations center will report back next month on how the government-funded institute can most effectively assist the scale of government AI ambitions in defense, national security and information gathering.
Operational Restructuring
The institute's chair, a former Amazon UK boss, confirmed that 78 different research projects at the 440-staff institute have been terminated, spun out or completed because they fail to match with the revised strategy.
Workplace Issues
The center has faced organizational challenges since last year as staff protested against changes, culminating in a team of staff members submitting a formal grievance to the relevant regulatory body.
The institute's leadership stated that these employee allegations were third-party reviewed by a neutral third party that found them to have no substance.
Expanded Research Focus
The organization will also focus on deploying AI for ecological purposes and healthcare advancements.
Researchers will develop ways to use the quickly-evolving systems to more speedily and exactly project changes in weather patterns, marine environments and sea ice, partly to better inform government emergency planners.
